Stonetrade introduces Plum Brownstone, an imported red-brown, quartzitic sandstone, which is harder, denser and more weather resistant than the Connecticut Brownstone that was extensively used in the Northeast and New York in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Connecticut stone, sometimes called “East Longmeadow Brownstone” or “Portland Brownstone” is now very difficult to find, sometimes only as salvage.

Our new Plum Brownstone is available in long lengths, ideal for sills, lintels and treads. Our partner factories are able to carve it with CNC technology to match historic profiles and details. Being a quartzitic sandstone, Plum Brownstone is similar to PA or NY Bluestone in hardness and durability, far superior to the original brownstone which, being a standard sandstone, was fairly soft and porous. Plus, Plum Brownstone is one of the few sandstones on the market that is hard enough to flame, which gives new finish options. It also cleaves well on the bedding direction.
